Panna Water
Panna Water
The source of the delicious mineral water “Acqua Panna”, was discovered in the Tuscan Apennines in 1927. Its ancient source, located at a height of more than 1000 meters north of Florence, remains an uncontaminated reserve hidden within a green forest rich in meadows on the slopes of Monte Gazaro in Scarperia.
Known for centuries by shepherds, farmers and hunters of the area, legend has it that the Romans built the only road that led from Southern Italy to Northern Italy right there, through Scarperia, to allow tired travelers to refresh themselves with that ‘waterfall.
In the 1500s, terracotta pipes were used to transport water from the natural spring to the home of the noble Florentine Medici family. The house where the Medici lived was cream-colored, so the water took the name of Acqua Panna and the emblem found on the label recalls the spring where the water was born.
In 1860 the Medici built a bottling plant on their agricultural estate. The water was bottled manually and brought to Florence on horseback, labeled and sold in demijohns.
After World War I in 1927, Panna water began to be sold on an industrial level. In 1959 an Italian company, Sanpellegrino, purchased the bottling plant and in 1970, Acqua Panna was launched on the market as the first mineral water in plastic bottles.
In 1994, natural water was exported to the United States and soon after became part of Nestle Waters. Its excellent digestibility and quality have earned Acqua Panna a place on American tables and around the world.
