Bilancino Lake
Bilancino Lake
About 10 million years ago there was a basin that extended for 300 square kilometers, from the Calvana Mountains to the Balze di Vicchio.
Over time, the sediments brought by the streams slowly left a flat valley floor without water, marking the end of the lake.
Today the ancient basin has been replaced by Lake Bilancino, artificially created in the 80s and 90s by the Tuscany region; 69 million cubic meters of water with a maximum depth of 31 metres just a few minutes from the Barberino di Mugello motorway exit.
Created to solve Florence’s water supply problems and to protect it from floods and droughts, today it presents itself as a tourist oasis for multiple sports and will soon become a place for national and international competitions.
With its clean waters, there are many activities you can do, such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing. You can also practice sport fishing; it is possible to fish for carp, chub, perch and pike. There are also many paths and cycle paths where you can go trekking, jogging or mountain biking.
